Doreen Andoh

Ghana

Doreen Andoh, 33, of Ghana is a journalist with Ghana’s leading newspaper, The Daily Graphic, the flagship newspaper of the Graphic Communications Group Limited. She studied at the Ghana Institute of Journalism for her first degree and also has a diploma in Communication Studies from the same Institute. Ms. Andoh writes on a large variety of topics, including health, the environment, water resources, housing and business. She has also produced features, commentaries and opinion pieces on development issues. Her special interests are sustainable development, health, women and children’s rights, Ebola and other development-related subjects the United Nations explores. Ms. Andoh believes that a deeper understanding of the operations of the United Nations will enable her to write more credible articles to inform her readers about the world body’s activities.

Karthikeyan Hemalatha

India

Karthikeyan Hemalatha, 26, works as the senior correspondent for the Tamil Nadu edition of Times of India. He has a degree in environmental science and covers public transport, climate change, ocean ecology, agriculture and the impact of government policies on the poor. He serves as a senior correspondent. Recently, he travelled along Tamil Nadu’s coast to report on the 10th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami that killed at least 10,000 people in the state. The series of stories revolved around how some of the poorest in the country recovered from the disaster, role of international aid and the changing fishing patterns since the disaster.

Mercy Juma

Kenya

Mercy Juma, 26, is a broadcast and print journalist at NTV and The Daily Nation of Kenya. She has covered the 2014 session of the Commission on Population and Development in New York, the manufacture and delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina, and has written features on unsafe abortions and maternal deaths, teen mothers and terrorism in Kenya. Ms. Juma has done stories that analyze climate change, extreme poverty and malnutrition in Turkana, an arid region in northwest Kenya, as well as polygamy, HIV-AIDS and the absence of birth control in some regions in Kenya. She holds a degree in Information Sciences. Ms. Juma is interested in data journalism to distribute information in the digital era, climate change, and sexual and reproductive health rights. At the United Nations, she is keen on following the discussions in the Security Council on global terrorism and its impact on Kenya.

Fabíola Ortiz

Brazil

Fabíola Ortiz dos Santos, 29, is a Brazilian freelance journalist reporting in Portuguese, Spanish and English about human rights, international affairs and sustainable development. She has attended U.N. forums and other international conferences on related issues and travelled to over 20 countries worldwide. She has contributed to the Inter Press Service and a UK based website RTCC – Responding to Climate Change and SciDev.net. Since 2011, she has published in the Brazilian press Universo Online, Opera Mundi, Veja.com, Folha de São Paulo and a website member of The Guardian Environmental Network. In the past she worked in the Rio de Janeiro bureau of Agence France Presse and the Portuguese news agency LUSA. She has been a finalist twice for journalism awards for her reports on sustainable development in Brazil. Ms Ortiz was a contributor to the 2014 book “Until the Rulers Obey: Voices from Latin American Social Movements” edited by Marcy Rein and Clifton Ross.

Support The Fund

Although the Fund is based at the United Nations, it does not receive financial support from the world organization. The Fund’s program for journalists relies entirely on financial support from U.N. Missions, foundations, organizations and individuals.
