The third Dag Hammarskjöld Inspiration Award was presented to Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation and the Better World Fund (site), to honor his visionary leadership in financing and advocating projects on the environment, population, children's health and human rights, among others. Wirth, a former US senator from Colorado, is in charge of the $1 billion pledged by Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, in 1997, to benefit the United Nations. The foundation so serves as a center for companies, individuals and charities who want to work with the world body and penetrate its bureaucracy.
