Fellowship Goals

During their time at the United Nations, the journalism fellowship recipients:

  • Observe international diplomatic efforts and deliberations of the U.N. member nation representatives as they work to address pressing global issues affecting peace, human rights and development throughout the world. 
     
  • Interview high-ranking dignitaries from the 192 member nations who come to the U.N. during the first several weeks of the General Assembly, as well as those who are assigned to the Permanent Missions to the U.N.
     
  • Learn about the work of the U.N. related organizations (such as UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and others) that have programs and projects focused on alleviating problems and challenges in developing countries.
     
  • Be mentored by senior U.N. journalists in order to hone their professional skills which they will share with their colleagues when they return to their countries.
     
  • Forge professional and personal relationships with U.N. officials and journalists from other countries which have proven to be most helpful to the careers of the journalists.
     
  • Learn about the role and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy and ways to promote excellence in journalism.
     
  • Interview high-ranking dignitaries from the 192 member nations who come to the U.N. during the first several weeks of the General Assembly, as well as those who are assigned to the Permanent Missions to the U.N.
     
  • Have an opportunity to visit Washington, DC as guests of the U.S. Department of State, meet with their country desk officers at State, and visit with organizations and institutions based in Washington that have programs and projects in their countries.
     
  • Visit numerous print, television and radio media organizations
